Crafting--How I Would Have Done it Differently

Knitting--(large) stash of yarn, patterns, and supplies-- Check Crocheting--(large) stash of yarn, patterns, and supplies-- Check Cross Stitching--(large) stash of yarn, fabrics, patterns and supplies -- Check Sewing--stash of fabrics, patterns, notions and supplies-- Check Misc. crafting--stash of supplies-- Check Since I've been purging the above in the past year, I've asked myself why I have so much of everything.  How did it happen and why? Some of the reasons are --get excited about the craft, find all kinds of projects I want to make, so buy the supplies --find supplies on sale or have coupons for a large percentage off so must purchase while on sale. --much like the person who has "eyes bigger than their stomachs" I have plans greater than that for which my energy or time allows. --realize what's missing from my supplies and buy to fill in the gaps --cannot resist when people give me large bundles of items for free--free is good. FINISHED SEAMS -- OR NOT?

Image
This post was inspired by JillyBe.  She is quite creative and there is nothing ordinary about her sewing.  Her entries Here  and Here . She talked about making her friend's wedding dress in the 80s and was shocked when she realized that she had put in all that work with great fabric only to discover that she hadn't finished the seams.  Then about two years later Jilly made the christening dress for this couple's baby.  She was shocked when she realized that she had put in all that work with great fabric only to discover that she hadn't finished the seams. All of this reminded me that I had some baby dresses made by my mother and wondered if she had finished the seams.  I thought I might have my christening dress, but don't, but do have the christening blanket and pillow cover. These photos break an important rule of posting photos of garments:  have items clean and pressed.  These dresses do need ironing but I am a bit hesitant to iron t...

Man's Caftan

Image
Shocking I know---I am sewing. Shocking I know---I was actually thinking of writing a tutorial but for what subject?  Most sewers would already have knowledge of what I would write about.  Because of the stupid mistakes and problems I had with this caftan, (my fault--and this is what happens when one doesn't sew for awhile),  I will not be writing a full tutorial. A replacement caftan for hubby was way overdue.  I won't even show what the old one looked like.  I made this from one I had made from the original one, purchased many years ago.  Sorry, DH, for the delay, but at least you have a new one now. Hubby is average size, build, and weight so this pattern will work for most bodies.  If the person is large or small, adjust the width of the pieces (the hem bands will need to be wider by the same amount).  For short or the very tall, adjust length, as well as for the side band pieces.  The finished circumference,...

Seminole Patchwork Vest

Image
I wore this vest Saturday and thought I show post about another type of craft which I do. I don't do patchwork quilting, but do like Seminole patchwork. This was made in '97, but I did see the pattern still available a few years ago, so it still may be. The smallest pieces are 1/4 " by 3/4" finished. I worked with something that small? Yes, I did and I loved it. It is 100% cotton. I lined it with the same eggshell which I used in the pieces. I put on these purchased pants for the photo, and I see that that was a bad idea, as the fit is, well, bad. The front of the vest overlaps the back piece. A layer of batting is in between and to determine how I wanted the placement of the Seminole bands, I put the batting on a board, and laid the bands on the batting. This is view b, with a variation they offered although it is not shown on the envelope. Editing to add: Someone just asked me what a vest like this would cost. I really don't know, but I read ...

Some Sewing

Image
Finally got some sewing done! I couldn't get my sewing mojo going, so I stole some from another sewer. I prefer to say that she is sharing hers with me. It is a simple pair of elasticized pants in a lightweight denim in black. Nothing exciting, but I am in need of pants, especially casual ones. I won't be posting a pic of it since it is black and will not show up well. You're just going to have to trust me that I am sewing.
